Ellie Speaks out on Birthing
As an older mare I would like to share my thoughts
for the younger and up coming girls. Lets see where should I start. I guess I
should start with me. I myself have had two babies. I have a daughter that was
my very first. Let me fill you in on something girls. Wean your babies yourself.
Don't wait on your people to do it for you. At five months of age they should be
able to go with out nursing any more. I myself didn't feel I should wean my
filly and the people I was with at the time didn't think it was a big deal that
at four years of age she was still sucking on me. Let me tell you I will never
do that again. That was just way to much, but I have learned my lesson and want
to help you girls out as much as I can.
Next on my list going over your due date. Well on my second foal that's
what I did. I carried that baby for a full year. Good heavens try everything you
can to not go that long. It is not pleasant at all. Believe me eleven months is
long enough. Oh just so you all know my second baby was a beautiful colt.
Another thing I would like to bring up is after birthing your baby be
sure to clean yourself as soon as you can. I know it's the last thing you'll
have on your mind after all that pushing. But girls its really a must. To many
things can happen with all that nasty stuff hanging off the back of you. And
always be very careful not to push so hard that you shove your uterus out. I
myself have done this and it was a very painful thing to do. Plus lots of times
we mares aren't so lucky and things will rip and tear. The thing with that is
once it happens there is no fixing it and you will bleed to death. I myself was
very lucky and nothing like that happened to me. Also make sure when birthing
your people have a vet on call and close at hand. You never know when you might
need help.
One more thing girls and this is just between us. If your are lucky like
I am at having a stallion around all the time and you are thinking and even
wanting bred, don't show your heat. HEHEHE... that's what I did. I have always
let my people know when I am coming in and am in heat. But I so wanted to have
another baby I did my very best to hide it when my people were around. And it
worked and I was turned out with my stallion. I know it was a sneaky thing to
do, but I just couldn't help myself. I guess it was that mother instinct we all
have. You know seeing babies being born. Well I just wanted one more chance and
I got it. Well that's all I can think of for now. If I ever think of anything
else I will fill you all in. And if you ever want to ask me something don't be
shy. I will try to help you in anyway I can. Any way girls good luck with your
birthing and new babies. I'll chat with you all again later in the barn. Written by, Moresque Elegance (Ellie) |
